The return of the Golf R Wagon to the line-up provides a new halo variant for Volkswagen’s perennially class-leading compact car. The limited edition of 150 Golf GTI Performance Edition 1 sees the return the 3-door Golf hot hatch.
The expanded Golf Alltrack range brings 4MOTION all-wheel-drive to its lowest price point and – in response to demand – gives the Golf range its most potent diesel to date.
The headline act is surely the entry-level Golf 7.5 hatchback.
From $23,990, the Golf includes a level of specification and safety previously unobtainable at this price (see below). To provide context, the new entrant approaches the previous Comfortline in terms of specification, though it is several thousand dollars less expensive.
Initially there are eight grades of Golf 7.5 hatchback (including the Golf GTI Performance Edition 1) and six grades of wagon (including the now three-strong Golf Alltrack range).
There are 300 examples each of the Golf R Wolfsburg Edition hatch and Wagon available from late August. Pricing is being finalised. The Golf R Wagon returns permanently to the line-up in the New Year.

“The Golf Mark 7 won World Car of the Year and multiple national titles. The 7.5 range is enhanced in every respect. No doubt other importers will attempt to realign their offerings to compete, as ever they do.
“None of them can match the inherent value of owning a Volkswagen Golf – the world’s most sophisticated affordable car. The Golf brings to its price point technologies and innovations that were until recently the preserve of high-end luxury cars.”
The renewed Golf range will be launched in the first week of July in hatchback, Wagon and Alltrack variants.
Performance hatchback versions – the Golf GTI, Golf GTI Performance Edition 1 and Golf R – follow in mid-August.
The Wolfsburg Editions of the Golf R (hatch and Wagon) become available shortly thereafter. The regular Golf R Wagon arrives in January.
